It's been a Great Big Green Week!

The UK celebrated the first-ever Great Big Green Week this week – the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK! There were thousands of events hosted in honour of the week, and we were lucky enough to be included in one.

Civic Square collaborated with popular artist Lucky Pablo to create a beautiful, hand-painted Subpod Grow Bed for their new waste-busting pop-up garden in Birmingham.  

It looks like the Great Big Green Week has made a big impact too, with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson calling for world leaders to take action on climate change at the UN General Assembly yesterday. We hope to be a part of more projects that promote the fight for our planet and environment, and would like to congratulate everyone in our community who participated in green events this week!

Top beef supplier approves methane-busting feed!

Turns out, cow burps are pretty lethal. A huge portion of the methane emissions created by human activity comes from the agricultural industry – specifically, from the ‘natural emissions’ of our bovine friends.

Companies have been experimenting for over a decade with different cattle feeds in an attempt to reduce the emissions that cows create (you might remember this article) but none of the experimental foods have been approved for use in the industry… until now!

Top beef suppliers from Chile and Brazil have officially approved the sale of a feed additive called Bovaer that cuts the methane emissions of dairy cattle by up to 55% and beef cattle by up to a whopping 90%. The feed will also be given to sheep and goats, with the potential to greatly reduce the overall impact of the meat industry on the environment!

”The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) stated that a rapid reduction of methane emissions could reduce the spread of global warming in the near term and have a positive effect on air quality,” says a spokesperson of Royal DSM, the company that created Bovaer. “We know the agricultural and livestock sectors recognize this opportunity for change and are eager to act.”

City or farm life? You might not have to choose

Do you crave an idyllic farm life, but find the thought of being over an hour away from the nearest coffee shop a bit of a nightmare? Then you’d probably love for an Agrihood to open up in your city.

A mixed-income apartment complex in San Francisco has just broken ground, one that comes with its very own 1.5 acre farm! Called Agrihood, the block will have a combination of 361 units and 30 townhomes, and the farm is to be managed by agricultural professionals, producing 20,000 pounds of fresh produce a year.

Agrihood heralds the dawn of a new type of city living that will connect people to their food while still accommodating a more modern lifestyle – in short, it’s the kind of project we love. Residents will be welcome to potter on the farm and buy the produce grown on-site at the complex’s farmers market for a steeply discounted price.

Of course, if you live in a city there’s plenty of ways to bring nature to your home, but we dream of skylines that are more green than grey, and projects like Agrihood are a big step in the right direction for a greener future!

From the community – Among the strawberries

This sunny morning shot of @damsonsandlavender on her Subpod looks like the perfect, peaceful way to start a day. We can't wait to see that strawberry patch when it's fruiting – though it'll probably swallow the Subpod well before then!

“I'm not levitating above my strawberries here, I'm sitting on my Subpod and
sipping my morning coffee. Both my strawberry plants and I love this in ground
compost system. There's no smell from it whatsoever and we love feeding the worms and harvesting the most beautiful compost after them.”
